Reclaimed Street Pavers

Paving brick making thrived beginning in the late 19th century throughout the Midwest in areas where high quality shale could be mined.  The business really took off when the invention of the automobile at the turn of the century created a huge demand for paved roads across America.  The business grew and continued to thrive up until the invention of asphalt paving took over in the 1930s.   The manufacture of these shale street pavers continued as a niche end of the brick market up until the 1950's.   Hotbeds of paving brick included  areas around wet and dry rivers in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
